Finnmark – where dreams become reality

Sports in Finnmark have long and good traditions. The county has fostered many famous sportsmen in skiing, football, handball, swimming and wrestling. Everywhere in the county exist clubs and organizations. Notably football and handball have a lot of young participants. Every year Northern Norway’s largest football tournament for different age groups is organized in Alta: The Alta tournament.

Sports complexes like halls for swimming and playing football as well as track facilities and illuminated cross-country skiing tracks are easily accessible and provide important recreational activities during the winter.  Finnmark has also types of sports which are less usual elsewhere in our country, such as  snowmobile crossing, reindeer sledge and dog sledge competitions. Every year the longest and northernmost dog sedge competition of Europe, the Finnmark competition (‘Finnmarksløpet’) is organized with a start and goal in Alta. That is after having crossed the whole county including Kirkenes.

During wintertime the Varanger area has ideal conditions for kiting on skis and with snowboard. A long winter season, enormous snow covered mountain plateau areas and a lot of wind combine for perfect snow kiting conditions. Each year the Varanger Arctic kite Enduro is organized. This is a long distance competition which uses the whole Varanger peninsula as an arena.
